About SEIU Kids First

We are Maryland’s family child care providers.  We raise and educate Maryland’s next generation.  Yet nearly half of us can’t afford health insurance, we get paid late, and we often struggle to cover our costs and pay our bills.

Now that we’ve won our union, we’re standing up for what’s fair and for the working families that depend on us every day.

    What It’s All About

Quality child care and learning in the first 3 to 5 years set the stage for better success throughout a child’s life. Stable, consistent care has a strong, positive effect on children, their development and their school readiness.

Childcare providers, along with parents, are the first teachers. Home-based child care is highly sought after by parents, because parents know how important a low child-to-provider ratio and consistent care are. Providers who care for children of underserved or low-wage workers – largely single mothers – are especially important to the successful of our workforce.

Child care is in crisis. Access to affordable, quality child care is undermined as family child care providers struggle to stay in business. Turnover is high due in part to low earnings, low reimbursement rates for subsidized care of children with no access to healthcare and other benefits.

Around the country, home child care providers are joining together to help solve the crisis and create better working conditions for themselves – and to ensure quality care for children.
